GETZI, GETZI, DUNDUGH!
Kev Orkian A Big Hit Down Under
by Linda Jansezian

On Saturday 7th of April, a big Armenian crowd were waiting in anticipation to see what Kev Orkian is going to dish out in the way of comedy at the Bellvue in Sydney Australia.

Obviously they weren't aware of what the show will be like since all they had heard until that time was Kev's famous prank calls on the Hokis Volume Meg CD.

The MC started to introduce Kev from backstage "ladies and gentlemen, he's the worlds tallest Armenian, he has walked all the way from London to see the Armenian kangaroos" right there Kev seized the microphone from the MC's hand and stated in Armenian to hold everything since he has to go and pee. From that moment on he had the audience eating out of his hand. Kev joked about his hairy mother, his hairy sister, his hairy ass, he sang, he danced and he even got a standing ovation when he banged out the Sabre dance from Aram Khatchatourian on the grand piano.

The usually conservative Australian Armenian crowd were so entertained that they kept Kev on stage for an extra two hours, since they could not get enough of his funny anechdotes. Eagle Promotions management who invited Kev from England to make his way down to Australia also had nothing but praise for the little Armenian with the big mouth. When asked whether they were happy with the show or not, the answer was written all over their face.

Kev's concert was not only a financial success for Eagle Promotions, it was the start of a new chapter in staging Armenian shows in Australia. "According to the Armenian miootunes in Sydney who have had the strong hold on all Armenian shows during the last thirty odd years and have not let any private organisations stage any Armenian shows. This was certainly a revolutionary step" Said Alfred Markarian from Eagle Promotions. "We have had a number of shows in Australia before, but mind you none have been specifically for the Armenian community" added Harry H. Cakmak also of Eagle Promotions.

Kev himself was amazed with the crowd's response since this was his first all Armenian show. " I am glad it worked out well, I was not expecting such a great response" Said Kev who has usually done English musicals, theatre and stand up comedy circles.

NOTE: Eagle Promotions were so happy with Kev's performance, they actually nominated him to be the host of the 2001 Armenian Music Awards. The answer from Peter Bahlawanian of AMA was YES! After viewing the video tape of the show Peter was convinced Kev would make the best host for the greatest Armenian show on earth. Watch out for Kev on November 17th when he hosts the 4th Annual Armenian Music Awards at Alex theatre, Glendale, Los Angeles.
